What If You Can’t Find Your Preferred Date?

BlogHeader-01

In the moving industry, we often refer to summer as “Peak Season.” As we take a look back at 2021’s summer moving season there were a variety of challenges in front of our industry and with much of the world still in flux, due to lasting pandemic impacts it can be hard to predict what summer 2022 will look like. When talking with our customers about upcoming relocations, we urge clients to book early when trying to secure a specific moving day.

We’ve all had to learn to be a bit more flexible and adaptable over the last few years, and if you are struggling to get your ideal moving date, here are some options you can consider.

Delay Your Closing Date

If you are unable to choose the move-in date that you are looking for, work with your realtor to push back on your closing date. This isn’t an unusual ask when selling your home. Data from the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) showed that closing delays occur for many different reasons.

Rent Back From Buyers

Another recommendation would be to consider renting back. What is renting back? When selling your home you and the buyer come to an agreement that allows you to continue to live in your home after the closing date in exchange for rental payments. These payments can include mortgage payments, property taxes and homeowners insurance (PITI).

Short-Term Apartment Lease

If your closing and move-out date are set in stone and you’ll have a gap between your move out and move in dates, consider a short-term apartment lease.

If you’re currently living in an apartment, you will want to ask your landlord/leasing agent to extend your lease by a month-to-month basis. When it comes to negotiating an apartment lease you will want to emphasize:

  1. How reliable and responsible you’ve been
  2. Your commitment to paying rent on time
  3. Your respect to the property
  4. How well you’ve treated your neighbors

Alternative Work Arrangements

If you are moving for work you should contact HR to see if your work arrangements can be modified. This may result in a remote position for the time being or a delayed start date. Employers should be flexible with this because… Life happens!
