United Movers Study: A Look Back at 2024

neighborhood

Every year, United Van Lines gives us a detailed look at where Americans are moving and, more importantly, why. According to their 2024 National Movers Study, affordability and family ties were front and center in shaping where Americans set down roots last year. Once again, the Southeast continues to be a magnet for new residents, and South Carolina stands out as one of the top choices for the fifth year in a row.

We’ve broken down the key takeaways from the 2024 study, especially the trends that hit close to home for Georgia and South Carolina. Let’s dive in!

Moving In

This year, the states with the highest number of residents moving in were:

  1. West Virginia
  2. Delaware
  3. South Carolina
  4. District of Columbia
  5. North Carolina
  6. Alabama
  7. Rhode Island
  8. Oregon
  9. Arkansas
  10. Arizona

South Carolina ’s ranking hasn’t budged since last year, with more people moving in than out. And while Georgia didn’t make the top 10 in 2023, Georgia still ranked among the top states in the nation, with 115 people moving in for every 100 who moved out.

The Southeast Is Booming

If one thing is clear from the study, it’s that the Southeast is the place to be. People are flocking to states like South Carolina and Georgia, and it’s easy to see why. South Carolina, in particular, continues to be a favorite, with about 62% of all moves involving the state being inbound. Whether it’s retirees, families, or professionals looking for a fresh start, South Carolina keeps checking all the right boxes.

Georgia’s not far behind. It might not have made the top 10 list for inbound moves, but it’s still a popular choice for people looking to mix vibrant city life with affordable, suburban charm. Both states keep drawing people for practical and personal reasons—like affordability and being close to family.

Spotlight on South Carolina and Georgia

South Carolina

If you’ve spent any time in South Carolina, you already know why it’s so attractive to movers. It’s a blend of quaint small towns, beautiful beaches, and cities like Charleston that radiate charm. It’s especially popular with retirees who are looking for a slower pace of life, mild weather, and plenty of outdoor activities like golf and coastal walks.

Families and young professionals aren’t left out either. The growing job market, solid schools, and affordable living options make it a great place to settle. Not to mention, places like Myrtle Beach and Charleston are major hubs, with almost 80% of moves inbound.

Here’s a quick snapshot at a few of the reasons people choose South Carolina:

  • Retirement (26.8%)
  • Family (18.8%)
  • Lifestyle (17.4%)
  • Jobs (15.8%)

Georgia

Georgia tells a similar story, with its mix of vibrant city life in places like Atlanta and quieter, family-friendly towns across the state. Atlanta continues to pull in younger professionals thanks to its booming industries and entertainment scene. Meanwhile, for families and retirees, smaller towns in Georgia provide the space and affordability that big-city living just can’t match.

Here’s a closer look at some of the reasons people moved to Georgia in 2024:

  • Family (33.1%)
  • Jobs (25.3%)
  • Retirement (12.5%)
  • Lifestyle (5.9%)

Why Are People Moving?

This year’s study showed a big change—after decades of job-related relocation topping the charts, 2024’s top reason for moving was to be closer to family. Nearly 28% of people moving across states said they did it to be closer to loved ones.

Affordability was another huge factor. With housing prices climbing in dense urban areas, more people are seeking more bang for their buck in less crowded, more budget-friendly places. Enter the Southeast. States like South Carolina and Georgia offer the perfect mix of lower living costs and great quality of life, making them a top choice for families, retirees, and remote workers. In fact, Georgia is among the top 10 most affordable states for housing.

A Look Back at Trends Over the Years

It’s always helpful to take a step back and compare where we are now to past years. When the pandemic hit in 2020, it changed everything about how and where people wanted to live. Suddenly, cities weren’t as appealing as they once were, pushing people toward states like South Carolina. Remote work opened the door for many to prioritize space, safety, and affordability.

While the pandemic may no longer be as disruptive, its ripple effects can still be seen today. Families and retirees are still chasing the same goals—more space, reasonable costs, and being closer to loved ones. That’s why places like Georgia and South Carolina are still in high demand.

The Flip Side: High Outbound States

While the Southeast keeps attracting movers, some regions are seeing more people leave than stay. New Jersey, for example, led the outbound list in 2024 for the seventh year in a row, with 67% of moves being outbound. It’s easy to understand why—rising costs, higher taxes, and retirees heading to warmer states like Florida are all major factors.

States like Illinois, California, and New York are seeing the same trend. For a lot of people, these places are just too pricey or overcrowded, making it hard to stick around when cheaper, less hectic options are out there.

What This Means for You

If you’re considering a move in the near future, whether it’s to South Carolina, Georgia, or anywhere else, these trends offer some helpful insights:

  • Family Matters: If being closer to loved ones is driving your decision, the study confirms you’re not alone. Movers are prioritizing family ties when deciding where to relocate.
  • Find Your Savings: Housing affordability is a game-changer for many. Exploring states like South Carolina or Georgia might help stretch your dollar further without sacrificing quality of life.
  • Work-Life Balance: If you’re able to work remotely, you have more flexibility than ever to choose a home based on lifestyle rather than job location.
