5 Things to do BEFORE Moving into Your New Home

Hook up and test utilities This might seem like common sense, but you’ll want to make sure that you have power, water, and heating or air units that have been turned on to heat or cool the house so that move-in day is comfortable. You’ll also want to make sure you know where the breaker panel is in case you need access to it as you are hooking up electronics and other services during move-in.

Flooring Changes/Cleaning

If you are planning to replace flooring in any of the rooms in your home, or if you are considering hiring someone to clean the existing flooring, doing this prior to move in is definitely a good idea. This ensures that they aren’t having to work around your furniture and boxes and they are able to clean the entire floor or that you won’t have to move things while flooring is being ripped out and replaced.

Repaint Walls and Ceilings:

Another task that is much easier to complete before move-in is painting, especially in smaller rooms. Getting the walls and ceilings repainted prior to move in will help your house feel more complete once you move your furniture in and also ensures that you won’t have to deal with moving and covering furniture during the painting process.

Deep-Clean Your Home While many sellers will clean their homes after moving out, it’s still worth the effort to do a deep clean and make sure you’re starting with a clean palette. Take time to clean flooring, cabinets, bathrooms, existing blinds, vent coverings, etc. It might take a little extra work, but after move-in day it might take some time to get around to deep cleaning again as you’re trying to settle in, so this is a great way to stay ahead of those home maintenance tasks. Again, cleaning the whole house is a lot easier to do when there isn’t lots of stuff in your cabinets and closets to work around, so take advantage of your big empty space to clean all those hard to reach areas.

Prep for Moving Day:

Once you have your new home clean and tidy, make sure to take time to prep for moving day. While our team of professionals from ADSI Moving Systems will bring floor coverings and some bumpers to protect stairs and railings, if there are specific areas you are worried about or hazards like low hanging lights and loose floor coverings, or items like rugs that you already have in place, you will want to make sure that those items are moved to avoid tripping and bumping hazards. Additionally, make sure you have some bottled water, paper towels, toilet paper, and some cleaning supplies on hand for moving day. Finally, make sure you have your day-of essentials prepared and get a good night’s sleep before moving day.
