Recommendations and referrals don’t always have to be from people you know, and it’s always a great idea to check out online reviews. As you read online reviews, here are a few important things to keep in mind. 

Remember the Big Picture

Reviews are subjective and only represent one person’s experience or opinion. Try not to get hung up on one bad review in a sea of good reviews. Additionally, it’s important to know that online reviews only reflect the experiences of a small sample of real customers. Studies show that only about 1.5% of total consumers leave reviews. 

Most consumers only feel the need to leave a review when they have had a negative experience. Read negative reviews with an eye for context. A calm and honest critique of a company is most likely more trustworthy and credible than a review that is bad-mouthing a company without any substantial reasoning. 

Reputable Sources

Use the most reputable online review platforms as you search for online reviews. The most recommended being Google My Business, Better Business Bureau (BBB), or directly on that company’s website.

Look Out For Fake Reviews

While not overly common, fake reviews do exist. Fake reviews can be positive or negative, and it can be hard to decipher a fake review over a real one. If a review contains many of these common characteristics, it may not be trustworthy.

• Too few details about who is leaving the review
• Extreme reviews, either 1-star or 5-star
• Too vague or overly technical wording
• Unverified purchase
• If no other reviewers have found the review “helpful”

Personal Recommendations

Outside of checking online reviews, be sure to ask people in your area who they recommend. Ask family and friends if they have any recommendations. They will be honest about their experience and most people you know have moved at least once. 

If you have a realtor helping you buy or sell your home, ask them if they have any companies they recommend to clients. If you know of anyone that just moved to or from your current neighborhood, ask them about the experience they had with their moving company.
