How to Prepare Your Family Room for Moving Day

As you prepare for moving day, each room in your home is a little different. The family room seems to be a catch-all space, filled with toys, books, furniture, entertainment systems, art and wall décor, and more. It’s easy to see why this room can seem overwhelming to prep for moving day. If you are packing your space yourself, here are 5 simple steps to follow to make sure everything is ready for moving day.

  1. Clear the surfaces: Start by clearing off the surfaces of your furniture, this includes coffee tables, end tables, cabinets, book cases, and even your mantle. Make sure items that will be grouped together or reused in your new home are securely packed together and the boxes are clearly labeled so you can find the items after moving.
  2. Prep Furniture: Once you have cleared the surfaces, prep your furniture. If furniture pieces have drawers, make sure those are empty, if they have removable shelves, be sure to remove those and wrap them for protection during transit. Once furniture is prepped, wrap it in blankets or furniture pads to help protect it during your move.
  3. Protect Pictures and Mirrors: Most family rooms have an assortment of items on the wall, like art, mirrors, or family photos. Make sure to wrap those items in paper pads or bubble wrap and consider using cartons specifically designed for these items. Wrap the tape around the items in multiple directions to ensure its securely closed and store the items on edge to help prevent other items from being stacked on top of them during your move.
  4. Safely pack your electronics: TVs, sound systems, and gaming consoles are often found in family rooms, so knowing how to pack those items is key. We highly recommend using the original boxes, as they were designed specifically to protect your items in transit. If you do not have the original cartons, your moving company can provide specialty cartons for these items. Make sure to wrap them in foam or bubble wrap to protect them. Additionally, make sure to keep cords and plugs in the same boxes and clearly mark them so that you can easily setup the items in your new space.
  5. Prepare Rugs and Textiles: Large area rugs can be tough to handle. We recommend rolling the rug so that the floor side faces OUT. If you’re moving in the elements, consider wrapping them in plastic to keep them safe and dry. Use painters tape to tape the rolled rug so you don’t leave sticky residue on it. Its best to do this last and make sure to unroll them as soon as you can so that you avoid the edges of the rugs curling up in your new space. If you find this happens, just set some heavy boxes on the corners to help flatten them out faster.
