How to Move Large and Bulky Items

Do you have large, heavy or bulky items that need moving? Whether you’re moving yourself, hiring movers or shipping your furniture, there are certain things you need to know in order to make the move go as smoothly as possible and help you stay safe in the process.

If you Hired Movers

If you’ve hired professional movers, then congratulations – moving large and heavy items just got a whole lot easier! Your movers will have the experience and expertise to safely move just about anything. However, there are still a few things you need to do in order to prepare for their arrival.

First, make sure you have a clear path from the door to where the item will be placed in your new home. This sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how often people forget to do this! Movers will not be able to safely move items if they have to walk over obstacles or go through tight spaces. So take a few minutes to clear a path, and make sure all doors and hallways are unlocked and unobstructed.

Second, if you have any fragile items that need to be moved, make sure to pack them properly and clearly label the box as “fragile.” This will help your movers handle them with extra care.

And finally, although your movers will do their best to protect your belongings, it’s always a good idea to have insurance just in case something gets damaged during the move. Check with your moving company to see what kind of coverage they provide, and consider getting additional insurance if necessary.

Moving Yourself

If you’re moving yourself, then you’ll need to take some extra precautions when moving large and heavy items. The most important thing to remember is to lift with your legs, not your back. This will help you avoid injury and keep the item from slipping out of your hands.

It’s also a good idea to have someone else help you move the item, even if it’s just to hold the other end or offer moral support. Moving heavy objects is difficult, and two people are always better than one!

These supplies will help:

Moving dollies will make moving heavy items much easier, and you can usually rent them from your local hardware store.

Sliders are special pads that you place under furniture to help it slide more easily across the floor. You can usually find these at your local hardware store as well.

Furniture straps or moving straps can help you lift and carry items that are too heavy or awkward to do on your own.

Mattress slings are a moving strap that goes around your mattress to help you carry it more easily.

And remember to take your time – rushing will only increase your chances of getting injured.

Shipping Your Furniture

If you’re shipping your furniture instead of moving it yourself or hiring movers, keep these tips in mind.

First, make sure your furniture is properly packed and cushioned – you don’t want it to get damaged during transit.

Second, make sure you choose a reputable shipping company with experience in moving large and heavy items. And finally, be prepared to pay a bit more for shipping – it’s not cheap to ship bulky items!

Some other things you can do to prepare your items for your move includes:

  • Protect corners and delicate parts: Use bubble wrap, packing peanuts or old towels/blankets to cushion these areas
  • Dismantle items if possible: This will make them easier to pack and will also save on shipping costs
  • Use strong boxes: Moving boxes are sturdier than regular cardboard boxes, so they’ll better protect your belongings during transit
  • Cover glass items: Use packing paper or bubble wrap to prevent glass from shattering

Moving without Tools

Even if you don’t have any moving tools, there are still ways to move large and heavy items. Make sure to follow these tips:

Use the high low method: This involves moving the item a little bit, then repositioning yourself so you can lift it a bit higher. Repeat this process until the item is in its final destination

Bend from the knees: This will help you avoid injury and keep the item from slipping out of your hands

Empty furniture: Make sure to empty your furniture, take the drawers out of your dressers and take the legs off your items. This will make your items lighter and easier to move.

Use a sheet: Place a sheet under the item, then grab the edges of the sheet and use it to slide the item across the floor.

Moving large and heavy items doesn’t have to be difficult – just follow our tips and you’ll be moving like a pro in no time! Changed your mind on moving yourself?
